EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts the heroic intervention of Polish troops during the Battle of Somosierra on November 30, 1808, in the Spanish War of Independence. The battle took place in the Province of Madrid, on the de Guadarrama Sierra, as the French Grande Armée, led by Napoleon Bonaparte, attempted to invade Madrid. The Polish Chevau-legers of the Imperial Guard, under the command of Jan Kozietulsk, played a crucial role in the battle. The Polish cavalry, part of the Duchy of Warsaw, fought alongside the French forces. Amidst the chaos of the battlefield, the Polish riders can be seen charging forward with determination, their horses' hooves thundering against the ground. Some Polish soldiers are shown brandishing their bayonets, while others carry backpacks, ready for a long and arduous campaign. The engraving, created by Lemaitre, was published in the "History of Poland" by Charles Foster in 1840. It offers a glimpse into the European theater of the Napoleonic Wars, a period of intense military conflict that saw the rise and fall of empires. The Battle of Somosierra was a significant moment in the Peninsular War, as the Polish intervention helped to delay the French advance on Madrid, allowing the Spanish forces to regroup and eventually repel the invaders. This powerful image serves as a testament to the bravery and resilience of the Polish troops, who fought valiantly against overwhelming odds to defend their allies and uphold their honor. The engraving is a poignant reminder of the complex web of alliances and conflicts that characterized Europe during the 19th century.
