EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the intricate beauty of a 13th-century Breviary fragment, showcasing the exquisite craftsmanship of medieval manuscript production. The two leaves, likely from a breviary, feature Gothic textualis rotunda script in dark brown ink, with embellished single-line capitals and alternating red and blue 2-line capitals adding vibrant pops of color to the page.
The red rubrics and initial words further enhance the visual appeal of this ancient text, while two large historiated initials provide a glimpse into the artistic sophistication of the period. Despite being cut for use as binding fragments, with some loss of text along the bottom and one side, these leaves still exude an aura of elegance and historical significance.
The photograph not only captures the overall composition of the fragment but also provides detailed shots of both inner and outer sides, allowing viewers to appreciate every aspect of its design. This piece serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage preserved within medieval manuscripts like this one, offering a window into a bygone era where craftsmanship and artistry were held in high esteem.
