This charming postcard image captures The Casemates Barracks in Gibraltar during the early 1910s. The Casemates Barracks, a historic military installation, is located at the eastern end of Gibraltar's Upper Rock, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Built between 1725 and 1741, the barracks were designed to protect the British territory from potential invasion. The photo shows the barracks' impressive architecture, with its red-tiled roofs, whitewashed walls, and tall, arched windows. The meticulously manicured gardens surrounding the barracks add a touch of greenery to the otherwise rocky landscape. Soldiers can be seen marching in formation on the parade ground, their uniforms crisp and pristine. The Casemates Barracks were named after the casemates, or fortified rooms, that were built into the rock face to provide shelter for soldiers during sieges. These casemates were also used as living quarters for soldiers and their families. The barracks were in continuous use until the late 20th century, when they were converted into a museum and cultural center. The postcard was taken by Terry Parker, a renowned photographer of the time, who captured the essence of Gibraltar's military history and colonial charm.
