EDITORS COMMENTS
This medieval fragment, dating from the 14th century, is a surviving piece of a charter or deed, recording the sale of a house by the couple (-) Wingartman and his wife. The parchment, inscribed in Middle German, displays the gothic cursive hand of a scribe, with the text written in brown ink. The charter appears to originate from the neighborhood of Trier, as indicated by the place name. The exact year of the transaction is not fully legible, with only the number "13" discernible. The middle portion of the charter is presented here, with text missing from both the left and right sides. Despite this, the top and bottom portions of the text remain intact, providing context and essential information regarding the sale. The fragment offers a glimpse into the past, providing evidence of property transactions during the medieval period. The gothic script, a popular writing style during the Middle Ages, is characterized by its flowing lines and intricate letterforms. The use of parchment, made from animal skin, was a common practice during this time, as it was more durable than paper and could be easily stored and transported. This fragment serves as a reminder of the rich historical records that have survived from the medieval period. It also highlights the importance of preserving historical documents, allowing us to better understand the past and the people who lived during that time. The fragment is part of the UCL Library Services Digital Collections, available through Mary Evans Prints Online, and offers researchers and history enthusiasts a unique opportunity to explore the intricacies of medieval manuscripts and the history of property transactions during this period.
