EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Fernando d'Avalos (1489-1525): The Neapolitan Military Commander in the Italian Wars of the Holy Roman Empire" This engraving portrays Fernando d'Avalos, a pivotal figure in the Italian Wars of the 16th century. Born in Naples, d'Avalos was an Italian condottiero of Aragonese descent, holding the titles of 5th Marquis of Pescara, Duke of Francavilla, Count of Montalbano, and Prince of Tarento. He rose to prominence as the chief commander of the Habsburg armies of Charles V in Italy during the Habsburg-Valois Wars. D'Avalos' military career began in the early modern period, and his exploits earned him a reputation as a formidable and skilled commander. His most notable victory came during the Battle of Ravenna in 1512, where he led the Habsburg forces to a decisive triumph against the French and Venetian armies. This engraving, created in the 19th century, showcases d'Avalos in full armor, adorned with the emblems of his various titles and the Habsburg double-headed eagle. The intricate detail of his curiass, or armored jacket, and the meticulous rendering of his helmet and gauntlets reveal the artistry of the engraver. The later coloration applied to the engraving adds depth and vibrancy to the image, enhancing the viewer's appreciation of the subject's regal bearing and the opulence of his armor. D'Avalos' piercing gaze and the determined set of his jaw convey his unwavering commitment to the cause of the Holy Roman Empire and the Habsburg dynasty. This evocative portrait offers a glimpse into the rich history of the Italian Wars and the influential role played by d'Avalos in shaping the political landscape of Europe during the Renaissance period.
