1. Title: "Fernando Nunez de Guzman (ca. 1480-1553): A Spanish Rhetorician and Greek Commander, Known as Nunius Pincianus or Pinciano This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic figure of Fernando Nunez de Guzman, a Spanish scholar and military commander of the 15th and 16th centuries. Born around 1480, Nunez de Guzman was a professor of Greek at the prestigious University of Alcala, located in the heart of Spain. He was also a knight commander in the Order of Santiago, a prominent military and religious organization in the Spanish kingdoms. Nunez de Guzman, also known as Nunius Pincianus or Pinciano, was a man of many talents. He was a Hellenist, well-versed in Greek language and culture, and a renowned rhetorician, a master of the art of persuasive speaking and writing. His expertise in Greek and rhetoric made him a sought-after figure in the intellectual circles of his time. The portrait, created as a lithograph by Llanta, was published in the 19th-century Spanish historical work "Cronica General de Espana" (General Chronicle of Spain). The image shows Nunez de Guzman in the prime of his life, with a full beard and wearing the distinctive garb of a Spanish knight. He is depicted wearing a gorget, a protective neck piece, and a ruff, a fashionable collar popular during the Renaissance era. The cross on his chest signifies his religious affiliation and his status as a knight commander. Nunez de Guzman's life spanned an era of great change in Europe, marked by the rise of the Spanish Empire and the spread of the Renaissance. He was a man of the modern age, who combined the intellectual pursuits of a scholar with the military prowess of a commander. His legacy continues to inspire scholars and students of Greek language, rhetoric, and military history to this day.
