EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting image captures the tragic death of General Gordon at the hands of the Mahdi's followers on January 26, 1885. The drypoint etching by George Joy, created in 1895 and published by Frost and Read in 1897, vividly depicts the momentous event associated with the Siege of Khartoum during the First Sudan War. General Charles Gordon, a British military officer and administrator, was sent to Sudan to evacuate Egyptian forces from Khartoum during a period of political turmoil. However, he found himself besieged by the forces of Muhammad Ahmad al-Mahdi, a religious leader who had declared himself as the Mahdi or "guided one." In this dramatic scene captured in George Joy's print, General Gordon is shown surrounded by his enemies as they deliver their fatal blow. The intensity and emotion conveyed through Joy's intricate lines and shading evoke a sense of despair and tragedy. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during times of conflict and colonial expansion. It immortalizes General Gordon's final moments as he bravely faced his fate at the hands of his adversaries. This historical artwork stands as a testament to courage, sacrifice, and the complexities of imperialism in Africa during this tumultuous period.
