EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage lantern slide depicts the German Fleet under surrender in Scapa Flow, Orkney Islands, Scotland, on 28th November 1918. The First World War was coming to an end, and the German High Seas Fleet, the largest naval force of the Central Powers, was ordered to surrender to the Allied forces to prevent it from being scuttled or destroyed. In this image, we see a vast array of German warships anchored in the natural harbor of Scapa Flow, with their flags at half-mast. The once-feared fleet now lay defenseless, a testament to the shifting tides of war. The photograph, taken from a distance, captures the grandeur and scale of these naval vessels, some of which were built during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. The image is part of The Keasbury-Gordon Photograph Archive Collection from Mary Evans Prints Online, providing a unique glimpse into history and a reminder of the momentous events that took place during the First World War.
