EDITORS COMMENTS
Gonzalo Fernandez de Cordoba, also known as El Gran Capitan (The Great Captain), was a renowned Spanish general and statesman of the 15th and 16th centuries. Born in Andalusia, Cordoba, in 1453, he rose to prominence during the Iberian Peninsula wars against the Muslims and the Turkish-Venetian forces. This engraving, created by Serra in 1883 and held at the Museo Militar, depicts Fernandez de Cordoba in the prime of his military career. He wears a grand headdress adorned with feathers, signifying his high rank, and carries a cap of conquest, a symbol of his victories. The portrait also showcases his regal attire, complete with a flowing cape and a sash across his chest. During his tenure, Fernandez de Cordoba played a pivotal role in the Reconquista, the reconquest of Spain from the Moors. He served as the Viceroy of Naples and played a significant part in the Second War of the League of Cambrai, where he successfully defended the city against the French and Venetian forces. Under the reign of the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon, Fernandez de Cordoba continued to make crucial contributions to Spain's military and political landscape. His strategic prowess and leadership skills earned him the title of El Gran Capitan, a testament to his greatness as a military commander and statesman. This engraving, originally in black and white, has been colorized to bring out the intricate details of Fernandez de Cordoba's attire and enhance the overall visual impact. The image serves as a reminder of Spain's rich history and the significant role played by its military leaders during the modern period.
