EDITORS COMMENTS
A Symphony of History: Musical Instruments at the International Inventions Exhibition of 1885 Step back in time and feast your eyes on this collection of historical musical instruments, showcased at the International Inventions Exhibition held in South Kensington, London, in 1885. With nearly 4 million visitors during its 6-month run, this world fair was a sensation, graced by the presence of Queen Victoria herself. This photograph, taken by the Illustrated London News, captures a glimpse of the musical pavilion, where instruments from various eras and cultures were displayed for the fascination and delight of the public. The exhibition presented a unique opportunity for visitors to explore the rich history of music and its instruments, from the ancient to the modern. Among the treasures on display, we find the Citerna, an ancient Italian instrument resembling a small harp, with a curved neck and a soundbox covered in animal skin. The Arches and Lutes, such as the Rizzio and the Riazzios, originated in Italy and Spain, respectively, and were renowned for their distinctive shapes and resonant sounds. The Paduan Cistre, a small, portable harp, and the Singing Trumpet, a brass instrument with a unique design that produced a melody when the player blew air through a small hole, were also showcased. The Liamont Harp, with its elegant, slender shape and delicate strings, was a sight to behold. This photograph serves as a testament to the enduring allure of music and its history, as well as the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the inventors and artisans who created these remarkable instruments. The International Inventions Exhibition of 1885 not only celebrated the advancements of the time but also paid homage to the past, making it an unforgettable event in the annals of history.
