EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving, titled "Native Bondei people of Bonde" from the 19th century publication "El Congo y la Creacion del Estado Independiente de este nombre. Historia de los Trabajos y Exploraciones Verificados" (The Congo and the Founding of its Free State. A Story of Work and Exploration), offers a glimpse into the lives of the indigenous Bonde people living in what is now Tanzania during that era. The image, produced in Barcelona around 1890, was created by the renowned explorer and journalist Henry Morton Stanley. The Bonde people, also known as the Bondeh or Bondei, are an ethnic group belonging to the larger Bantu ethnicities. They are depicted here in their traditional attire, huts, and surroundings. The men are shown armed, likely for protection against wildlife such as the crocodile seen in the river behind them. Their huts, with conical thatched roofs, are typical of the housing styles in tropical regions of East Africa. The palm trees and canoes add to the tropical ambiance of the scene. The Bondei people were known for their strong warrior culture, as evidenced by the shields carried by some of the men in the image. The presence of a boat suggests their proficiency in navigation, which would have been essential for their daily lives and trade with neighboring communities. This engraving offers a contemporary perspective on the history and culture of the Bondei people during a significant period in African history. It serves as a reminder of the rich diversity and complexity of African ethnicities and their unique ways of life.
