EDITORS COMMENTS
HMAS Australia (D84) - A Proud Symbol of Australia's Naval Heritage This striking photograph captures the majesty and power of HMAS Australia (D84), a County Kent Class Heavy Cruiser that served in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) during the interwar period and into World War II. Built in the United Kingdom in 1928, HMAS Australia was commissioned into the RAN in 1931 and went on to earn eight battle honours during her service. The County Kent Class Heavy Cruisers were designed to provide long-range support for the Royal Navy's battlefleets and were among the most advanced cruisers of their time. With a displacement of over 10,000 tons and armed with a main battery of eight 8-inch guns, HMAS Australia was a formidable vessel that could hold her own against enemy warships. During the 1920s and 1930s, HMAS Australia played an important role in maintaining the peace in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. She took part in several international naval exercises and visited various ports around the world, promoting goodwill and strengthening diplomatic relations. However, the tranquility of the interwar period was shattered with the outbreak of World War II in 1939. HMAS Australia was quickly mobilized and saw action in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, engaging enemy ships and providing cover for Allied convoys. Her bravery and determination earned her eight battle honours, a testament to her crew's skill and sacrifice. Today, HMAS Australia remains an enduring symbol of Australia's naval heritage. Her legacy continues to inspire and shape the Australian Navy, which continues to protect and defend Australia's interests at home and abroad. This photograph is a reminder of the proud history and tradition of the RAN and the vital role it plays in safeguarding Australia's security and sovereignty.
