This photograph captures the historic HMS Submarine No. 1, also known as Holland 1 or HM Submarine Torpedo Boat No. 1, commissioned by the Royal Navy in 1901. As the world's first operational submarine, this pioneering vessel represented a revolutionary milestone in naval warfare. Built by the Dutch inventor John Philip Holland, the submarine was designed to provide the British military with a covert and powerful weapon against enemy ships. Commissioned in 1901, the submarine served the Royal Navy for a decade before being lost at sea in 1913. The image, dated circa 1904, offers a glimpse into the early days of submarine technology. The boat's sleek, torpedo-shaped hull and conning tower are evident, as are the large propeller and rudder at the rear.
