Only interview between the Commanders, Wellington and Nelson
The Army and Navy representing the only interview between the Great Commanders, Wellington and Nelson! Chromolithograph, unknown publisher, 1890 (c).Vignettes behind the figures of the Battles of Waterloo and Trafalgar.Associated with the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815).Vice-Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson and Major-General Sir Arthur Wellesley (later Field Marshal The Duke of Wellington) met on 12 September 1805 in the waiting room of the Colonial Office on Downing Street. Both men were waiting to be interviewed by Lord Castlereagh, the Secretary of State for War and the Colonies. Wellesley was an up and coming commander who had just returned from India where he had served with great distinction. Nelson was already a national hero whose greatest triumph (and death) was to come just over a month later at Trafalgar. In this interpretation of their one and only meeting the artist has depicted the Battles of Waterloo (1815) and Trafalgar (1805) on the wall behind both men. These were the two greatest British victories on land and sea of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.. Chromolithograph Date: 1805

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph print captures the historic and only meeting between two of Britain's greatest military commanders, Vice-Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson and Major-General Sir Arthur Wellesley (later known as the Duke of Wellington). The image depicts the moment when these legendary figures crossed paths in the waiting room of the Colonial Office on Downing Street in 1805.
Nelson, already a national hero, had yet to achieve his greatest triumph at Trafalgar just over a month later. Meanwhile, Wellesley was an up-and-coming commander who had recently returned from India with great distinction. Both men were awaiting an interview with Lord Castlereagh, Secretary of State for War and Colonies.
In this interpretation of their encounter, the artist has included vignettes behind them depicting their respective victories at Waterloo and Trafalgar - two pivotal battles that shaped British history during the Napoleonic Wars. The attention to detail in this print truly brings to life this unique moment when these iconic leaders came together before making their mark on history.
This piece serves as a reminder of the bravery and strategic genius displayed by both Nelson and Wellington during one of Britain's most tumultuous periods. It is a testament to their enduring legacy as two of the greatest military minds in British history.
