EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: 14th Century Bifolium from a Copy of Justinian's Pandects: Books V and VI (Fragment) This exquisite 14th century bifolium is a precious fragment from a larger manuscript of Justinian's Pandects, also known as the Digesta Justiniani Augusti. The parchment leaves contain part of the end of Book V (De Judiciis) and the beginning of Book VI (De Rei Vindicatione). The main body text is written in two columns in a beautiful brown ink, surrounded by a gloss, also in two columns. Both the text and gloss, as well as the titles, are penned in a litera bononiensis script by the same hand. The litera bononiensis script, a popular and elegant script of the late Middle Ages, is characterized by its rounded letters and distinctive 'a' and 'g' shapes. The script's name derives from the University of Bologna, where it was widely used. The handwriting in this fragment demonstrates the scribe's mastery of the script, with consistent letterforms and careful spacing. Interlineal and marginal annotations are present throughout the bifolium, indicating that this was a well-used and studied text. The annotations provide valuable insights into the intellectual discourse surrounding Justinian's legal code during the Middle Ages. The fragment is an essential piece of medieval manuscript history, offering a glimpse into the study and preservation of Justinian's legal code during the late Middle Ages. The print showcases both the whole bifolium and each folio separately, allowing for a detailed examination of the intricate details of the text and the beautiful script. The Pandects, or Digesta, were a compilation of Roman law, edited by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I in the 6th century AD. The Digesta served as the primary legal code for the Eastern Roman Empire and significantly influenced the development of Western European law. This 14th century fragment is a testament to the enduring importance of Justinian's legal legacy.
