EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures five of the most prominent legal figures during the first 25 years of King George V's reign (1910-1935). Taken in 1935, the image features Earl of Reading (Rufus Isaacs, 1st Marquess of Reading), Earl of Birkenhead (Frederick Edwin Smith, 1st Earl of Birkenhead), Lord Sankey (Andrew Thomas Tasman Edward McFarlane, 1st Viscount Sankey), Lord Carson (Edward Henry Carson), and Sir John Simon. Each man wears the traditional wig and gown of the British legal profession, adding to the formal and historic atmosphere of the image. Earl of Reading, a former solicitor, served as the Viceroy of India from 1921 to 1931, and was the first Jewish member of the British Cabinet. Earl of Birkenhead was a prominent Conservative politician, Attorney General, and Lord Chancellor. Lord Sankey, a Canadian-born judge, served as the Lord Chancellor and Lord Chief Justice of England. Lord Carson was a Unionist politician and barrister, known for his role in opposing Irish Home Rule. Sir John Simon, a Liberal politician and barrister, served as the Attorney General and Lord Chancellor. This photograph provides a snapshot of the legal and political landscape of the United Kingdom during the 1930s, a time of significant social, economic, and political change. The men in the image represent the establishment, the guardians of the law and the upholders of tradition, standing resolute in the face of the challenges and uncertainties of the era.
