EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning portrait print captures the essence of Lieutenant John James Douglas, a distinguished member of the 15th Regiment of Light Dragoons (Hussars) in 1819. Painted by renowned artist Sir Henry Raeburn, this masterpiece showcases Douglas in full military regalia, complete with his busby resting on his hip.
Douglas's military career was illustrious, having seen active service in the Peninsula and at Waterloo. In 1819, he purchased a captaincy in the 22nd Light Dragoons before the regiment was disbanded, leading him to half pay. He later succeeded his father as the 3rd Baronet and assumed the additional surname Scott after marrying Hannah-Charlotte Scott.
The portrait itself is a testament to Raeburn's skill as an artist, even though it remained unfinished upon his death in 1823. It is believed that one of Raeburn's pupils completed the painting shortly after his passing.
Lieutenant John James Douglas stands tall and proud in this image, embodying all that was noble and courageous about military officers during this era. His legacy lives on through this striking portrait print, serving as a reminder of his dedication to duty and honor on behalf of King and country.
