Lifeboat returning to harbour, St Ives, Cornwall

The James Stevens lifeboat in a choppy sea, returning to harbour, St Ives, Cornwall. The James Stevens No.10 was built for St Ives by Thames Ironworks in 1899. At 37.5 feet she was too long to be taken through the narrow streets of St Ives, so was delivered to Hayle and from there taken by sea to her new station. She had a successful career during her 33 years in service, launching 59 times and saving 227 human lives and 5 dogs. Date: circa 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the James Stevens lifeboat battling through choppy seas as it returns to harbour in St Ives, Cornwall. The iconic vessel, built in 1899 by Thames Ironworks, was too large to navigate the narrow streets of St Ives and had to be delivered by sea from Hayle. Despite its unconventional journey to its station, the James Stevens No.10 went on to have a remarkable career over its 33 years of service. Launching an impressive 59 times and saving the lives of 227 humans and even five dogs, this lifeboat became a symbol of safety and rescue along the rugged coastline of Cornwall. The brave crewmen aboard faced treacherous conditions time and time again, risking their own lives to save others at sea. The historic significance of this image is palpable as we are transported back in time to circa 1904 when Edwardian-era technology met the unforgiving power of nature. This snapshot not only showcases the resilience and dedication of those who served on board but also serves as a reminder of the importance of maritime rescue efforts throughout history.
