EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the McDonnell Douglas KDC-10 T-264 (msn 46985, line number 264) of the Koninklijke Luchtmacht (Royal Netherlands Air Force) or Klu, is seen making its approach to RAF Mildenhall in March 1998. This particular KDC-10 is a converted military transport aircraft derived from the commercial DC-10, with T-264 having been previously operated as PH-MBT. The KDC-10 was a variant of the DC-10 designed for the United States Air Force (USAF) as a new-build military tanker aircraft, but due to budget constraints, the Dutch government opted to purchase and convert commercial DC-10s instead. The Dutch Air Force received a total of six KDC-10s, with T-264 being one of them. The KDC-10 was a versatile aircraft, capable of performing various roles, including transporting troops, cargo, and patients, as well as refueling other aircraft in mid-air. The conversion process involved installing a refueling boom and other necessary equipment, transforming the commercial DC-10 into a military tanker. As the KDC-10 T-264 glides towards RAF Mildenhall, its distinctive livery and large size are on full display. The aircraft's powerful engines roar as it descends, ready to land and refuel other aircraft or transport essential supplies. The image captures the raw power and grace of this impressive machine, a testament to the ingenuity of aviation engineering and the versatility of the DC-10 platform. This photograph is part of The Tony Lovelock Collection from Mary Evans Prints Online, offering a unique glimpse into the history of military aviation and the role of the KDC-10 in the Royal Netherlands Air Force.
