EDITORS COMMENTS
This detail from a 19th-century lithograph showcases the renowned Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616). Born in Alcalá de Henares, Castile, Cervantes is considered one of the greatest authors of the European Golden Age. He is best known for his masterpiece, "Don Quixote," a novel that has left an indelible mark on world literature. The portrait, created by the Spanish artist José Cebrian, depicts Cervantes in the later years of his life. He is seen wearing the fashionable clothing of the era, including a ruff collar, a gorget, and a voluminous shirt. Cervantes' distinctive goatee and moustache add character to his visage. The lithograph was published as part of the "Cronica General de Espana" (General Chronicle of Spain), a comprehensive and illustrated historical record of Spain and its provinces. This work, produced in Asturias and Leon in 1867, aimed to document Spain's rich history and culture. Cervantes was not only a prolific novelist but also a dramatist and poet. His works, which include "La Gitanilla," "La Numancia," and "Los Baños de Argel," have been translated into numerous languages and continue to be read and studied worldwide. Cervantes' influence on literature is immeasurable. He is often referred to as the "father of the modern novel" and is celebrated for his innovative storytelling techniques and his ability to create complex and believable characters. This portrait serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of this ingenious gentleman from La Mancha.
