Mrs Sloper and her Children

The original painting was long regarded as showing Mrs Goddard and her children, with the dead mother in the sky looking down at her daughters on earth. It was then revealed that it wasn't Mrs William Goddard, daughter of General Sloper, but his wife, Mrs Sloper. Mrs Goddard was not married when Gainsborough died in 1788, and she died in 1798. Date: 11th December 1920

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the poignant scene of Mrs Sloper and her children, a painting that was long mistaken for depicting Mrs Goddard and her daughters. The original artwork was believed to show the deceased mother in the sky looking down at her earthly offspring, but further research revealed the true identities of the subjects. It turns out that it wasn't Mrs William Goddard, daughter of General Sloper, portrayed in this touching piece by Thomas Gainsborough, but rather his wife, Mrs Sloper. This revelation sheds new light on the historical context of the painting and adds layers of complexity to its narrative. The spirit of a loving mother watching over her children is palpable in this image, as the girls gaze up towards their ethereal parent with a mixture of reverence and longing. The connection between mother and child transcends time and space, bridging heaven and earth in a tender moment frozen in art. As we contemplate this moving depiction of maternal love and loss, we are reminded of the enduring power of family bonds that withstand even death. The legacy of Mrs Sloper lives on through her daughters, immortalized in this evocative portrait captured on December 11th, 1920.
