EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Pierre Paul Savorgnan de Brazza (1852-1905): A Pioneering Italian-French Explorer and Colonial Administrator in Africa This engraving depicts Pierre Paul Savorgnan de Brazza, an Italian-French explorer and colonial administrator, who played a significant role in the late 19th century European exploration and colonization of Africa, particularly in the Congo Basin. Born in 1852, Brazza is best known for his establishment of the Middle Congo Free State, which later became the Republic of Congo. Brazza's bearded visage, dressed in the attire of a European explorer, exudes a sense of determination and adventure. The engraving, titled "El Congo y la Creacion del Estado Independiente de este nombre. Historia de los Trabajos y Exploraciones Verificados" (The Congo and the Founding of its Free State. A Story of Work and Exploration), was published in Barcelona around 1890. As a French naval officer, Brazza's explorations in Africa began in 1875 when he led an expedition to establish a French presence in the Congo Basin. He founded the settlement of Brazzaville, which later became the capital city of the Republic of Congo. Brazza's approach to colonialism was unique, as he aimed to establish peaceful relations with local African communities, which was a departure from the violent methods employed by other European powers during the Scramble for Africa. The engraving serves as a testament to Brazza's pioneering spirit and his contributions to the European exploration and colonization of Africa. His legacy continues to be celebrated in both France and the Republic of Congo, where he is remembered as a symbol of peaceful coexistence between Europeans and Africans during a tumultuous period of history.
