EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1935, showcases six pioneering figures of the land and air speed record scene during the first 25 years of King George V's reign (1910-1935). The esteemed group includes, from left to right, Sir John Alcock and Sir Arthur Brown, the first to fly non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean; Sir Malcolm Campbell, a record-breaking land speed racer; Sir Henry Segrave, a renowned water and land speed record holder; Sir Edmund Percival "Eddie" Rickenbacker, an American pilot and World War I flying ace; and Sir George Hubert Wilkins, an Australian-born polar explorer and aviator. The men are depicted in their prime, exuding a sense of determination and adventure. Alcock and Brown are seen in their flying gear, goggles perched on their foreheads, while Segrave dons a helmet and goggles, ready for a high-speed land race. Campbell, Campbell-Black, and Rickenbacker are dressed in formal attire, reflecting their status as esteemed pioneers in their respective fields. The 1930s, a decade marked by innovation and progress, saw these pioneers push the boundaries of speed and exploration. From the skies to the land and even the polar regions, their achievements left an indelible mark on history. This photograph is a testament to their courage, determination, and the spirit of adventure that defined the era.
