Step back in time with this early 1900s photograph of the Electrotyping Department in Port Sunlight, Wirral, England. This vintage image offers a fascinating glimpse into the industrial past of this model village, which was established by the Lever Brothers in the late 19th century. The Electrotyping Department, located in this bustling factory, was responsible for producing intricately detailed models and patterns using the electrotyping process. This innovative technique involved the use of an electroformed master pattern, which was created by depositing a thin layer of metal over a detailed model. The resulting master pattern could then be used to produce multiple copies with great accuracy and consistency. In this photograph, we see a group of skilled workers intently focused on their tasks, surrounded by the hum of machinery and the warm glow of lanterns. The room is filled with an air of industry and productivity, as the workers meticulously tend to their electrotyping machines. The large windows allow natural light to filter in, providing a contrast to the dark, enclosed workspace. The Port Sunlight Village, with its Victorian and Edwardian architecture, was designed to provide a comfortable living environment for the workers and their families. The village's picturesque streets, gardens, and community facilities were intended to promote a healthy work-life balance, making it a unique and forward-thinking industrial community. This photograph, taken from The Keasbury-Gordon Photograph Archive Collection, offers a rare and intriguing look into the history of Port Sunlight and the Electrotyping Department's role in the Lever Brothers' extensive manufacturing operations during the early 1900s.
