EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the moment of triumph for William McKinley as he stands before the American people, having been re-elected as the 25th President of the United States in the election year of 1900. Born on January 29, 1843, in Niles, Ohio, McKinley's political career began in earnest when he was elected to Congress in 1877. He served as Governor of Ohio from 1892 to 1896 before being elected to the presidency in 1896. During his first term, McKinley led the nation through a period of significant change. He oversaw the successful conclusion of the Spanish-American War in 1898, which resulted in the United States acquiring territories such as Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines, marking the beginning of American imperialism. McKinley also championed protective tariffs, which raised the prices of imported goods, thereby promoting American industry and boosting the economy. However, McKinley's second term was cut short when he was assassinated on September 14, 1901, by Leon Czolgosz, an anarchist. Despite the tragic end to his presidency, McKinley's legacy remains significant in American history. This portrait serves as a poignant reminder of a man who led the nation through a period of transformation and left an indelible mark on American politics.
