EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands standing proudly aboard a submarine during manoeuvres carried out by the Dutch navy in September 1916. Known for her strong leadership and adventurous spirit, Queen Wilhelmina reportedly even submerged in the vessel, making history as the first Queen-Regent to travel under water. Queen Wilhelmina ascended to the Dutch throne at a young age, following the death of her father, King William III, in 1880. Her mother, Queen Emma, served as regent until Wilhelmina came of age and was officially crowned Queen of the Netherlands in September 1898. In this image, we see a glimpse of Queen Wilhelmina's fearless nature and dedication to her role as monarch. Despite being surrounded by male naval officers on board the submarine, she exudes confidence and grace as she observes the operations taking place around her. This photograph is not just a snapshot from history; it is a testament to Queen Wilhelmina's pioneering spirit and unwavering commitment to serving her country. Through her actions both on land and under water, she left an indelible mark on Dutch history that continues to inspire generations today.
