Her reign was marked by tumultuous times, as her island nation fell under French conquest in the late 19th century. Despite facing immense pressure from colonial powers, Ranavalona III remained a symbol of resilience and defiance for her people.
As nationalist sentiments grew among the Malagasy population, Ranavalona III became a focal point for their hopes and aspirations. However, this only served to further antagonize the French authorities who saw her as a threat to their colonial rule. In 1897, she was ultimately forced into exile by the French government.
The image captured here is a poignant reminder of Ranavalona III's tragic fate. Despite being stripped of her throne and separated from her homeland, she continued to embody strength and dignity until her passing in 1917.
