EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant postcard, sent from third class passenger and eventual victim, Ernest Portage Tomlin, offers a glimpse into the final moments before the tragic sinking of RMS Titanic. The image on the card shows the White Star Line's magnificent ocean liner gracefully anchored in Southampton Harbour, a stark contrast to the impending disaster that would unfold just days later. Posted from Queenstown, Ireland, on the afternoon of April 11, 1912, at 3:45 pm, this postcard bears the telltale signs of its sender's anxious anticipation for the voyage ahead. The handwritten message on the reverse, now faded with time, reveals that Tomlin was excited to begin his journey to a new life in America. Sadly, Tomlin's story did not end well. His body was recovered by the Canadian recovery ship, Mackay-Bennett, on April 21, 1912, and numbered 50 in the official list of victims. The postcard, in excellent condition, is a poignant reminder of the human stories that lie behind the historical event. The 1910s were a time of great advancements in transportation, and the RMS Titanic, with its luxurious amenities and modern conveniences, represented the pinnacle of maritime travel. This postcard, with its intriguing history, offers a unique and personal perspective on this fascinating era.
