EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the haunting beauty of the Ruins of Tintern Abbey, located in Monmouthshire on the Welsh bank of the River Wye. Founded on May 9th, 1131, by the Lord of Chepstow, this historic site dates back to the early 12th century and is an excellent example of the transitional style of early English architecture, moving towards the more decorative styles that would come to define later periods. The abbey was originally established by Cistercian monks, and its six-bay nave once featured arcades to both the northern and southern sides. However, the abbey's fortunes changed with the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century, leading to its eventual ruin. Today, the ruins of Tintern Abbey stand as a testament to the passage of time and the rich history of Monmouthshire. This photograph, taken circa 1900, offers a glimpse into the past, inviting us to imagine the hustle and bustle of monastic life that once filled these ancient walls.
