EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print depicts a significant moment in the history of Cambre, Galicia, Spain, as Simon Arnao Date meets with Juan Caina, the Mayor of Cambre, and other notable figures in 1586. The occasion marks the restitution of properties once owned by Maria Pita, a renowned Galician heroine, following a lengthy litigation. Maria Pita, born in Cambre in 1525, gained legendary status for her bravery during the Siege of Corunna in 1589. During the conflict, she defended the city by waving a holy image of Saint James the Apostle, inspiring the besieged inhabitants to resist the invading English and Dutch forces. After the siege, Maria Pita was granted the properties as a reward for her heroism. However, over the centuries, the ownership of these lands was disputed, and the legal battle reached its climax in 1586. In this photograph, Simon Arnao Date, a representative of Maria Pita's descendants, and Juan Caina, the Mayor of Cambre, discuss the terms of the restitution. The document, now preserved in the Maria Pita House Museum in Corunna, marks the end of a long-standing dispute and the return of the rightful ownership of these historic properties to the Pita family. This photograph, taken from the Archive of the Kingdom of Galicia, offers a glimpse into the rich history of Galicia and Spain during the late 16th century. The image of Simon Arnao Date and Juan Caina, along with other distinguished figures, engaged in the formal restitution process, serves as a testament to the importance of historical preservation and the rule of law.
