EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, trainee paratroops are seen making their descent from a historic and unusual training platform - a Royal Air Force (RAF) barrage balloon. Circa 1980, the RAF's Balloon Operations Squadron was actively engaged in training paratroops from all military services using this unconventional method. Barrage balloons, first introduced during World War I, were primarily used for defensive purposes to protect against enemy air raids. However, during the late 20th century, they found a new role in paratroop training. The slow ascent and controlled descent provided by the balloons allowed trainees to practice their parachute jumping skills under controlled conditions, away from the high-stakes environment of a military aircraft. The scene captures the intensity and focus of the trainees as they prepare for their jump. Their determined expressions and postures reflect the rigorous nature of their training. The backdrop of the open sky and the vast expanse of the British countryside underscores the freedom and exhilaration of parachuting. This photograph is a testament to the innovative and adaptive nature of military training. The RAF's Balloon Operations Squadron, flying barrage balloons, played a crucial role in preparing paratroops for their missions until 1995. Today, this image serves as a reminder of the rich history of military aviation and the dedication of those who have served.
