EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts a grand dinner hosted by the Ottoman Grand Vizier for a European ambassador in the Imperial Council Chamber of the Topkapi Palace in Constantinople, around the year 1788. The scene takes place inside the Divan-i Hümayun, or the Imperial Council, a room where important state affairs were discussed and decisions were made. The European ambassador, dressed in formal attire, is seated at the head of the table, surrounded by Ottoman officials and dignitaries. The Grand Vizier, wearing the traditional Ottoman headdress and turban, stands at the far end of the table, gesturing towards the ambassador in a sign of welcome and hospitality. The European guests are entertained with a sumptuous feast, featuring an array of exotic Turkish delicacies, while the Ottoman men, dressed in traditional Ottoman clothing, look on. The scene is a testament to the diplomatic encounters between Europe and the Ottoman Empire during the late 18th century. The Ottoman Empire, which ruled Constantinople (now Istanbul) and much of southeastern Europe, was a major power in Europe and the Mediterranean, and diplomatic relations between European powers and the Ottoman court were crucial for maintaining peace and stability in the region. The engraving, created by Lemaitre, Lalaisse, and Branche, was published in the "Historia de Turquia" by Joseph Marie Jouannin and Jules Van Gaver in 1840. The work provides a detailed account of Turkish history and customs, making this image an invaluable source for understanding the diplomatic customs and practices of the Ottoman Empire during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
