EDITORS COMMENTS
This rare and captivating postcard, dated either 1910 or 1911, showcases the White Star Line's RMS Olympic undergoing construction at Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The image, taken by Walton of Belfast, depicts a floating crane in the process of lifting the aftermost fourth funnel onto the grand luxury liner. The crane, a marvel of engineering at the time, was designed by the renowned German industrialist Bertha Krupp, after whom the famous "Big Bertha" gun of World War I was named. The crane was manufactured by Benrather Maschinenfabrik in Germany and was capable of lifting a load of 150 tons to a height of 149 feet. The RMS Olympic, a sister ship to the ill-fated Titanic, was one of the largest and most luxurious cruise liners of the early 1910s, setting new standards for ocean travel. This postcard, which was posted much later from Northern Ireland, offers a unique glimpse into the history of shipbuilding and the construction of this iconic vessel.
