EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic and trailblazing figure of Bertha Felice Sophie von Suttner, nee Kinsky von Chinic und Tettau (1843-1914). Born into the Austrian nobility, von Suttner defied societal expectations by pursuing a career as a writer. Her literary debut came in 1866 with the publication of "Die Waffen nieder" (Lay Down Your Arms), an impassioned plea for peace and disarmament. The novel, which was serialized in several European newspapers, garnered significant attention and established von Suttner as a leading voice in the burgeoning pacifist movement. The image shows von Suttner in a formal, high-collared black dress, her signature white hair pulled back into a neat chignon. Her piercing gaze and serious expression convey a sense of determination and conviction. The oval signature in the bottom right corner attests to the authenticity of the photograph, adding an air of historical authenticity to the image. Von Suttner's advocacy for peace and disarmament continued throughout her life, culminating in her being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1905, alongside Alfred Fried, for their work on the "Hague Peace Conferences" and their book "The Arbitration of Disputes Between Nations." Her legacy as a pioneering feminist, pacifist, and writer continues to inspire generations. This photograph offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman who defied convention and left an indelible mark on history.
