EDITORS COMMENTS
Bombardment of San Juan, June 1898: A Historical Moment in the Spanish-American War This evocative image captures the intensity of the Bombardment of San Juan, an essential event during the Spanish-American War in 1898. The photograph depicts the United States Navy's Atlantic Fleet, anchored off the coast of San Juan, Puerto Rico, preparing to fire upon the Spanish fortifications. The moment before the onslaught, the ships' cannons are trained on the city, their muzzles smoking, as the sun sets over the Caribbean Sea. The Spanish-American War, which lasted from April to August 1898, was primarily fought over the United States' desire for territorial expansion and the perceived need to protect American interests in the Pacific. The conflict began with the sinking of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor, Cuba, on February 15, 1898. The United States, believing Spain to be responsible for the explosion, declared war on April 25, 1898. The Bombardment of San Juan marked the beginning of the military campaign in the Caribbean. On June 24, 1898, Rear Admiral William Shubrick ordered the fleet to bombard the city and its fortifications, which were believed to house Spanish artillery. The bombardment lasted for several hours, causing significant damage to the city and its defenses. The following day, a combined American and Cuban force, led by Major-General Nelson A. Miles, landed near Guánica, Puerto Rico, and began the invasion of the island. The Spanish forces, outnumbered and outgunned, surrendered on August 13, 1898, effectively ending the war. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the historical significance of the Bombardment of San Juan and the Spanish-American War. It stands as a testament to the power and might of the United States Navy during this period and serves as a reminder of the pivotal role that Puerto Rico played in American history.
