EDITORS COMMENTS
Nicolas Kratzer: A Bavarian Scholar in Elizabethan England This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic figure of Nicolas Kratzer (1487-1550), a Bavarian-born mathematician and astronomer who spent the latter part of his career in England during the Elizabethan era. Kratzer's life straddled the boundary between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, making him a pivotal figure in the transmission of continental learning to England. Born in Regensburg, Bavaria, Kratzer studied mathematics and astronomy at the University of Cracow in Poland before traveling to Italy to further his education. He arrived in England around 1538, bringing with him a wealth of knowledge and expertise in the latest mathematical and astronomical theories. In England, Kratzer quickly gained the patronage of King Henry VIII and his court. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society, the first such mathematician to be appointed, and was also a tutor to the future Queen Elizabeth I. Kratzer's most significant contribution to English science was his translation of the works of the great Greek mathematician Euclid, which was published in 1543 and became the standard text for mathematics education in England for centuries. Despite his achievements, Kratzer's life was not without controversy. He was embroiled in a bitter dispute with the English mathematician Thomas Harriot over the priority of their respective discoveries in algebra. Kratzer's reputation was also tarnished by his association with the astrologer John Dee, who was later accused of witchcraft. Despite these challenges, Kratzer's legacy as a bridge between continental and English science endures. This portrait, with its intricate detail and somber expression, serves as a reminder of the complex and fascinating life of this little-known but influential figure in the history of mathematics and astronomy.
