EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning illustration is Plate 12 from British Mammals Vol. 1 & 2 by Archibald Thorburn, created in the early 20th century between 1920 and 1921. The subject of the illustration is the walrus (Odobenus rosmarus), a large marine mammal belonging to the order Pinnipedia, family Odobenidae, and the suborder Odobeninae. Walruses are characterized by their long, thick tusks, large size, and blubbery skin, which helps them stay warm in their Arctic and sub-Arctic habitats. The walrus in this illustration is depicted in daytime, basking on an ice floe outside. Walruses are pinnipeds, meaning they are part of the group of mammals that includes seals and sea lions. They are also part of the larger group of Eutheria, which includes placental mammals, and even more broadly, the class Mammalia, which includes all mammals. Archibald Thorburn, the artist, masterfully captures the power and grace of this impressive creature. Walruses are carnivorous, feeding primarily on clams, mussels, and other bottom-dwelling invertebrates. They use their long tusks to break open the shells of their prey. The walrus was an important animal to the indigenous peoples of the Arctic, who hunted them for their meat, blubber, and ivory tusks. Today, walruses are listed as data deficient by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), meaning that there is not enough data to determine their conservation status. However, they face threats from climate change, which is causing the sea ice to melt, making it more difficult for walruses to access their food sources and breeding grounds. This beautiful illustration is a testament to the natural history art of the 19th century and the enduring fascination with the natural world. It is a reminder of the importance of preserving the habitats and populations of animals like the walrus, which continue to face challenges in the modern world.
