Abraham Antwerp Atlas Capture Considered Orbis Ortelius Pacific Terrarum Theatrum Whale
EDITORS COMMENTS
This detail is taken from the historic and groundbreaking work of Flemish cartographer Abraham Ortelius, titled "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum," or "The Theatre of the World," published in Antwerp in 1570. Considered the first modern atlas, this masterpiece showcases a map of the Pacific Ocean, a body of water that was still largely unexplored during Ortelius' time. The intricate etching displays a whale being captured in the sea between Japan and America, providing a glimpse into the economic and cultural exchanges that occurred between these distant lands. Ortelius' map is not only significant for its accurate representation of geographical knowledge during the late 16th century but also for its innovative approach to cartography. The atlas was produced using a uniform cartographic style, with maps of equal size and projection, making it a precursor to the modern atlas format. The maps were also bound together with a series of indexed tables, allowing for easier navigation and use. This particular detail comes from the Salamanca University Library in Spain, which houses a rare and valuable collection of early maps and atlases. Printed in Antwerp by the renowned publisher Christophe Plantin in 1588, this map remains an essential piece of cartographic history, showcasing the wonders and mysteries of the world as it was known during the Age of Discovery.
