He played a pivotal role in the Spanish-American War, commanding the Spanish squadron in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba on July 3, 1898. After the war, De Cervera returned to Spain and was appointed Minister of Marine and Colonies, where he advocated for modernization and reform within the Spanish Navy.
