Patriotism at the Halls, WW1
Sketches by Tony Sarg showing performers at various London shows singing patriotic songs shortly after the outbreak of the First World War. There is Mr Jamison Doggs singing Soldiers of the King at the Coliseum (conducted by the composer Leslie Stuart), Mr C Hayden Coffin singing Tommy Atkins, Leslie Stiles singing Stick to your Guns at the Empire and Leo Stormont reciting patriotic poetry and prose at the Palladium. It is satisfactory that there is an absence of " Jingoism" in the patriotic songs, evoked by the war, which now find place on the programmes of the principal Halls, comments The Sketch. Date: 1914

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph print, captured in 1914, showcases a series of patriotic performances at various London theatres in the aftermath of the outbreak of the First World War. The image, sketched by Tony Sarg for The Sketch magazine, depicts several prominent performers contributing to the war effort through music and poetry. At the Coliseum, Mr. Jamison Doggs can be seen passionately singing "Soldiers of the King," conducted by the esteemed composer Leslie Stuart. Meanwhile, at the Empire Theatre, Mr. C. Hayden Coffin captivates the audience with his rendition of "Tommy Atkins." Elsewhere, Leslie Stiles sings "Stick to your Guns" at the Palladium, instilling a sense of determination and resilience. The Sketch notes that these patriotic songs, which found their way onto the programs of the principal halls, were free from the "Jingoistic" fervor often associated with war propaganda. Instead, they served as a source of comfort and unity for the British public during this tumultuous time. As the nation prepared for the challenges ahead, the stage became an essential platform for expressing patriotism and boosting morale. These performances not only provided a momentary escape from the harsh realities of the war but also played a crucial role in the recruitment efforts and the overall spirit of unity among the British people. This poignant photograph print is a testament to the power of art and entertainment in times of crisis, reminding us of the indomitable spirit that carried the British people through the trials and tribulations of the First World War.
