EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Grumman F6F-5K Hellcat N4994V (msn A-11631, ex BuAer number 93879), a former United States Navy radio-controlled drone target, on display at the Air Museum in Lancaster, California on May 28, 1965. The Grumman F6F-5K Hellcat, a iconic World War II fighter aircraft, was repurposed as a drone target after its military service. The history of this specific Hellcat is marked by two significant incidents. The first occurred on January 11, 2003, when it collided with a Cessna 182H (N8567S) in the circuit at Parker, Arizona. Remarkably, the Hellcat managed to land safely, while the Cessna crashed. However, the Hellcat's fate took a tragic turn on October 8, 2005, when it crashed into power lines in Monterey, Tennessee. The aircraft fell to the ground and burst into flames, resulting in the unfortunate death of the pilot. Despite its eventful history, the Grumman F6F-5K Hellcat N4994V remains an intriguing piece of aviation history. Its presence in the Air Museum serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of this remarkable aircraft, which contributed significantly to the United States Navy during World War II.
