Originally built as a YB-35 prototype, this aircraft underwent several modifications, first being converted into a YB-35B, and later into a YRB-49A. The YRB-49A designation was given after the aircraft was fitted with a more powerful engine and other upgrades. From May 1950 to September 1950, the Northrop YRB-49A 42-102376 made a total of 13 test flights, providing valuable data for the development of this groundbreaking aircraft. Following the testing phase, the aircraft was delivered to Ontario Airport on April 26, 1951, for storage and eventual delivery to Northrop. Unfortunately, the YRB-49A 42-102376 remained in storage for an extended period. With a little over 17 hours on the clock, the aircraft was eventually scrapped in November 1953.
