EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the iconic Royal Air Force (RAF) Hawker Hurricane IIc, registration number PZ865, affectionately known as "The Last of the Many." The Hurricane IIc is a significant piece of aviation history, having first taken to the skies on 22 July 1944 at Langley, Buckinghamshire. Instead of being allocated to the RAF, this Hurricane was retained by Hawker Aircraft for trials work. In 1950, the aircraft moved to the Hawker factory at Dunsfold Aerodrome and was given the civil registration G-AMAU. It achieved great success when it finished second place at the prestigious 1950 Kings Cup Air Race, piloted by Group Captain Peter Townsend. At this time, the Hurricane was adorned with Hawker Aircraft's dark blue color scheme, featuring gold lettering and lining. The Hurricane IIc continued to make history, serving as a chase plane during the P.1127 flight trials and even appearing in the 1968 Battle of Britain film. In 1972, the aircraft underwent a refurbishment and was presented by Hawker Siddeley, Hawker Aircraft's successor company, to the RAF's Battle of Britain Memorial Flight based at RAF Coltishall. Reverting to its military serial identity, this historic aircraft remains an essential part of the RAF's rich aviation heritage. Circa 1977, this photograph captures the essence of the Hurricane IIc's enduring legacy, with its distinctive four-bladed propeller adding to its unique character. The Last of the Many continues to inspire awe and respect, standing as a testament to the courage and innovation of those who designed, built, and flew these remarkable aircraft during the Battle of Britain and beyond.
