EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a United States Air Force (USAF) Republic F-84D Thunderjet with the distinctive nickname "The Wicked Witch" (48-0746). The image is believed to have been taken in the year 1950, during the early service life of this iconic fighter-bomber aircraft. Initially assigned to the 20th Fighter-Bomber Group (FBG) of the USAF's 55th Fighter-Bomber Squadron (FBS) in 1949, this F-84D was later transferred to the 363rd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing (TRW) in 1951. In 1953, the aircraft became a part of the Georgia Air National Guard's 158th Fighter-Bomber Squadron. The F-84D Thunderjet, a single-engine, swept-wing jet aircraft, was a formidable addition to the USAF's inventory during the post-World War II era. Its powerful engine and advanced design made it a versatile platform for various missions, including fighter escort, ground-attack, and reconnaissance. By April 1957, "The Wicked Witch" was salvaged from the Military Assistance and Service Division Center (MASDC) bone yard. The MASDC was a major source of surplus military equipment that was made available to foreign military forces and other government agencies. The fate of this specific Thunderjet after its salvage is unknown. This photograph is a captivating reminder of the history and evolution of the United States Air Force and its aircraft, as well as the important role that the Republic F-84D Thunderjet played during the Cold War era.
