EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph, created by C. Hullmandel after D. Dighton and dated 1821, offers a glimpse into the enigmatic world of the Carbonari, an Italian secret society known for its clandestine rituals and revolutionary ideals. The image depicts a ceremony in progress, with various members of the organization taking part in the proceedings. At the center of the composition, we find the venerated image of St. Theobald, the patron saint of the Carbonari. The saint's presence adds a layer of spiritual significance to the event, underscoring the fraternal nature of the organization. The scene is set in a grand, ornate hall, with the Masters of the society seated at the front, flanked by their apprentices. The Grand Master, dressed in ceremonial robes and holding a scepter, presides over the proceedings. An Orator delivers a speech, while the Secretary records the proceedings in a ledger. The Adept, an initiated member, stands to the side, while the Master of Ceremonies and his two assistants ensure the smooth running of the event. The Carbonari, whose name translates to 'coal-burners,' were a significant force in Italian history, with their influence felt during the Napoleonic Wars and the Risorgimento period. Their rituals and traditions, shrouded in secrecy, have long fascinated historians and scholars. This illustration offers a rare glimpse into the inner workings of the society, providing a fascinating window into the past.
