1623 1695 Catholics Favour Pierre Preacher Protestant Refuge Rotterdam Theologian Enmity Incurred

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the intense gaze and profound intellect of Pierre Thoinot Gorre, better known as Pierre Thomines Du Bosc (1623-1695), a French Protestant preacher and theologian. Born during a time of religious turmoil in France, Du Bosc's fiery sermons and unwavering commitment to his faith earned him both the favor of King Louis XIV and the enmity of the Catholic Church. Du Bosc's early career was marked by success, as he gained a large following among the Protestant community in France. However, his outspoken criticisms of Catholicism and his refusal to convert to Catholicism led to his persecution. In 1664, he was forced to flee to the Netherlands, finding refuge in the Protestant stronghold of Rotterdam. Despite the danger, Du Bosc continued to preach and write, producing works that were widely read and influential in both France and the Netherlands. His most famous work, "The True Doctrine of the Sacrament," was a defense of the Protestant view of the Eucharist and a scathing critique of Catholic doctrine. Despite his exile, Du Bosc remained a thorn in the side of the Catholic Church and a symbol of resistance for French Protestants. His legacy continues to be felt today, as his writings and ideas continue to shape Protestant theology and inspire generations of reformers and dissenters. This portrait, likely taken during Du Bosc's later years, captures the intensity and resolve of a man who dedicated his life to defending his faith, even in the face of persecution and exile.
