Bonnet Camillebonnard Cassock Ermine Paulmercuri Throne Rochet

EDITORS COMMENTS
Pope Sixtus IV, born Francesco della Rovere in 1414, reigned as the Bishop of Rome from 1471 until his death in 1484. This stunning handcolored illustration, drawn and lithographed by Paul Mercuri with text by Camille Bonnard, depicts the Pope seated majestically on his throne, adorned in the regal attire of the time. The Pope wears the traditional papal tiara, a three-tiered crown symbolizing the triple office of Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Christ on Earth, and Sovereign of the Universal Church. The tiara is topped with a cross and adorned with precious stones. Sixtus IV is also wearing the papal camauro, or bonnet, which is a pointed hat with a tassel, and the almuce, a long, fringed band used to hold the papal tunic in place. The Pope's rochet, a long, sleeveless tunic, is made of red velvet and is trimmed with ermine fur. He is also wearing a simple cassock beneath the rochet. The throne on which the Pope sits is ornately decorated with intricate carvings and gold accents. The background of the illustration features a landscape with a bridge and a castle, adding to the sense of grandeur and power. This illustration is taken from the book "Historical Costumes from the 12th to 15th Centuries" published by Levy Fils in Paris in 1860. The illustration is a testament to the intricate details and attention to historical accuracy that characterized the works of Paul Mercuri and Camille Bonnard. The image of Pope Sixtus IV on his throne is a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and iconography of the late medieval period.
