Amur Big Cat Carnivora Daniel Giraud Daniel Giraud Elliot Elliot Epitheria Eutheria Felid Felidae Feliformia Felinae Feline Felis Feloidea Habitat Joseph Wolf

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 19th century illustration depicts the Amur leopard cat, Prionailurus euptilura, a small wild cat native to the forests of northeastern China and the Russian Far East. Often mistakenly referred to as the Bengal leopard cat or the Amur lynx, this feline is a member of the Felidae family, and is distinguished by its distinctive spotted coat, rounded ears, and short, bushy tail. The Amur leopard cat is a solitary and elusive creature, preferring to dwell in dense forests and mountainous regions. It is an agile hunter, feeding primarily on rodents, birds, and reptiles. This illustration captures the cat in its natural habitat, basking in the daytime sun, a rare sight as they are mostly active during the night. The illustration is attributed to Daniel Giraud Elliot, a renowned American naturalist and zoologist, and was published in the 1895 edition of Joseph Wolf's "Mammals of India, Ceylon, and the Eastern Archipelago." Wolf, a German-born British artist, was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to capture the essence of his subjects. This illustration serves as a reminder of the rich biodiversity of the Asian continent and the importance of preserving the habitats of endangered species such as the Amur leopard cat. Today, their populations are threatened by habitat loss, poaching, and climate change. Let us take inspiration from this beautiful image and work towards ensuring the survival of these magnificent creatures and their habitats for future generations to enjoy.
