On the Properties of Things,

EDITORS COMMENTS
or "De proprietatibus rerum," is a seminal encyclopedic work by the Franciscan friar Bartholomaeus Anglicus, translated into French by Jean Cordichon in the 15th century. This magnificent miniature painting is a visual representation of the text's astronomical section, which was produced in the Gothic art tradition, likely in Reims, France, and is now housed in the Municipal Library (Bibliothèque Municipale). Bartholomaeus Anglicus was a prolific writer and scholar of the Late Middle Ages, whose encyclopedic work covered a vast range of subjects, from natural philosophy and theology to mathematics and medicine. The translation by Cordichon was widely disseminated throughout Europe, making the knowledge contained within accessible to a broad audience. The painting depicts an astronomer, dressed in the robes of the Franciscan Order, gazing intently at the heavens through an intricately designed astrolabe. Surrounding him are various celestial bodies and astronomical instruments, including a celestial sphere, an armillary sphere, and a quadrant. The artist's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the rendering of the celestial bodies, which are depicted with great accuracy and intricacy. The painting is a testament to the intellectual curiosity and advancements in knowledge during the Late Middle Ages, as well as the importance of the encyclopedic tradition in the dissemination of knowledge. The fusion of text and image in "On the Properties of Things" served to engage and educate a wide audience, making complex scientific concepts accessible to those who may not have had the means or opportunity to study them in depth. This beautiful miniature painting is a visual representation of the text's astronomical section and a reminder of the enduring legacy of Bartholomaeus Anglicus and the encyclopedic tradition.
