EDITORS COMMENTS
from "Recherches pour servir à l'histoire naturelle des Mammifères, Vols. 1-4" (1868-74) by Drs. Henri Milne-Edwards and Alphonse Milne-Edwards, features an intriguing illustration of two distinct species of the Mustelid family, the Putorius fontanierii and P. astutus. This exquisite drawing, created in the 19th century during the height of the natural history movement in Europe, showcases the remarkable detail and accuracy that characterized the works of these renowned French naturalists. The Putorius fontanierii, also known as the Asian ferret-badger or the large ferret-badger, is depicted on the left side of the plate. This mustelid species, native to Eastern Asia, is characterized by its robust build, short legs, and distinctive facial features, including its long, bushy tail and small, pointed snout. The animal's fur appears to be a mix of brown and black, with lighter underparts. On the right side of the plate, the P. astutus, or the Asian ferret, is illustrated. This smaller mustelid species, also native to Eastern Asia, is recognized for its slender body, long legs, and agile, ferret-like appearance. Its fur is typically a uniform, sleek black color, and its face is marked by a distinctive white patch on its chest that extends down to its belly. The Milne-Edwards brothers' meticulous observations and illustrations of these two fascinating mustelids contributed significantly to the scientific understanding of the mammalian fauna of Eastern Asia during the 19th century. Their groundbreaking work, which was published in multiple volumes, remains an invaluable resource for researchers and natural history enthusiasts today.
